Godaddy Ultimate Domain Protection And Security

Is GoDaddy testing FREE Full Domain Privacy & Protection?

Unlike the early days in my domain investing journey, I found myself hand registering a few domains the other day.

As I was on autopilot, clicking through each screen of GoDaddy up selling additional domain extensions, email, etc., I arrived at a new web page not displayed before to my knowledge.

My mind and eyes are trained to select "No thanks" and uncheck the box for "Free Office Starter email" , but none of those options were present.

Full Domain Privacy & Protection

Instead, I found myself presented with a display offering three Domain Privacy & Protection options:

Basic Privacy Protection (included with domain registration) – Your name, address, phone number and email remain private in the public WHOIS

Full Domain Privacy & Protection ($9.99 per year) – Protects your domain against accidental expiration and malicious transfer. Prevents data from being accessed by 3rd parties (where applicable) which minimizes your data footprint and reduces the risk of your data being exposed.

Ultimate Domain Protection & Security ($14.99 per year) – Provides full domain privacy and protection. Protects your domain with automatic malware scans and continuous security monitoring and notifies you if anything is wrong. Monitors search engine blacklists to ensure your domain reputation is protected.

Clicking the "View Details" link for each reveals their respective description and service offering as displayed above.

While it's been over a year since GDPR took aim at the domain industry, GoDaddy's testing of Full Domain Privacy & Protection has its pros and cons.

On one hand, I welcome Basic Privacy Protection freely offered with each domain registration because it would greatly deter, if not eliminate, the number of spam calls and emails hawking their "world-class" design and development services.

Yet on the other hand, Basic Privacy Protection could be a nuisance for buyers attempting to contact me using a given domain's registrant contact information via WHOIS.

But seeing I list and sell a growing number of domains via Afternic and Sedo, Basic Privacy Protection would free up my time, not having to review spammy emails and voice messages, and space in both email and voicemail.

At the time of this publication, I was unable to replicate the Full Domain Privacy & Protection page, attempting to purchase another 2-3 domains (thank goodness I captured screenshots the first time).

Nevertheless, what are your thoughts about GoDaddy testing Full Domain Privacy & Protection when hand registering domains?
